THE SEA OF CORTEZ
Exploring Beneath Steinbeck's Wake

MISSION DISPATCH 2 • 03/12-15/03

Over the past few days, the crew on board the R/V WESTERN FLYER has launched the ROV Tiburon for several productive dives in the Sea of Cortez. They have also made bluewater scuba dives to collect samples and record animal behaviors. On March 13 the Tiburon collected animals at a depth of over 10,000 feet (3100 meters) in the deepest part of the Gulf of California. The Tiburon is capable of operating at a depth of over 13,000 feet (4000 meters).

The multidisciplinary team of researchers have now traveled to the Farallon and Guayamas Basins and they've made some truly startling discoveries!
